Weekly Update - 12/3/12

Durham, N.C. – The fall sports seasons began their play last week with all having good starts. Below are recaps from each sport. As the week wrapped up for the Unicorns, we also want to congratulations Bianca Gray, NCSSM '11 (pictured), on her NCAA Division I National Championship with the UNC Women's Soccer team as they defeated Penn State 4-1 on Sunday in the national championship.

Basketball: NCSSM opened their men's and women's season at Granville Central on Tuesday. The men fell in a hard overtime loss 77-76 while the women were overmatched 64-8. The teams have their home opener on December 7 as they host Trinity School.

Swimming: Both the NCSSM men and women took wins over Riverside and Voyager in their opening meet. The men women won with the score of 153, Riverside 102, and Voyager 41. The women took the victory with a score of 128 while Riverside had 113 and Voyager 44. Three NCSSM School Records in Men's Swimming fell in the meet with 200 Freestyle – Jacob Vosburgh – 1:51.33, 500 Freestyle – Jacob Vosburgh – 4:51.05 and 4x100 Freestyle Relay – Jack Allen, Jacob Vosburgh, Gabe Shepherd, Matt Weaver – 3:28.05. Swimming hosts a home meet on Tuesday at the Campus Hills pool in Durham.

Wrestling: NCSSM had a good showing in their first duals of the season Friday night dropping two close matches to Roanoke Rapids and Bunn. In the first dual the UNis were down 28-33 going into the final bout with a chance to pull out the victory with a fall but we came up a little short with the final score Roanoke Rapids 39 NCSSM 28. Henry Seiler, Josh Babich, and Billy Gottenstrater all secured pins as part of a 28-0 run by NCSSM late in the match. In our second dual against Bunn it again came down to the final match with Aaron Kovasckitz battling valiantly up a weight class to give us a shot with final team score ending 43-36 Bunn. Again the middle of the NCSSM lineup proved strong with Nick McNamara, Henry Seiler, Morgan Howell, Billy Gottenstrater and Jeshua Ray all securing pins for the UNIs.
